Kills 99.99% of germs…but what does this really mean?
Hand washes and cleaning products often claim to kill 99.9% or 99.99% of germs – we see it all the time – but what does it really mean? Is there any difference between the two?
Actually, there is. The ingredients in toiletries and cleaning products are tested in laboratory conditions against common bacteria and viruses.1,2 Ingredients are applied to test areas containing a known quantity of microorganisms and their ‘killing power’ is recorded.
If these ingredients were applied to a test area with 100,000 microorganisms, a hand wash with 99.9% killing power would reduce the number of microorganisms down to 100; but a hand wash with 99.99% killing power is 10 times more effective and reduces the number of microorganisms down to only 10.3
